Museum of Artistic Process and Public Art in Lund – Skissernas Museum

The museum of sketches (Skissernas Museum) in Lund focuses on the role of sketches in the artistic process. Since 1934, the Museum has collected sketches in many different materials for artworks intended for public spaces such as squares, town halls and schools.

The sketches provide an insight into the working methods of the artists, how ideas are investigated and artworks take shape.

Today as before it is common for a work of public art to be selected through a competition. Sketches and models for winning competition entries are richly represented in the Museum's collection.

Also an unsuccessful competition entries are here.

There are examples showing that the sketches (as an unsuccessful competition entries) could be more successful and famous than the winner. The best example is Swedish artist Isaac Grunewald and his sketches for the Marriage room (Vigselrummet) in Stockholm City Council House (Rådhus). Isaac came the second at that competition and never got his sketches into the public art, but these sketches made him popular.

There is the Swedish gallery with a sketches for public art in Sweden.

Carl Milles, Ivar Johnsson, Sigrid Hjerten, Bror Marklund and other famous Swedish artists are in Swedish collection of Skissernas museum.

Museum has also the International gallery with a selection of permanent and temporary projects from the end of 1800s until today.

Sonia Delaunay, Fernand Léger, Henry Moore, Diego Ribera, Henri Matisse and many other famous artists are in museum’s collection.
